SMALAK Proposal for Lux Magna Project September 2004
"Casual Sex"
In congested cities and suburbs there is always a demand for more space. We live virtually on top of one another in such environments. Amid this congestion there exists a place where everyone is entitled to a given amount of space which can be inhabited at ones leisure, for as long as one needs it. This place is the parking spot.
But why use this valuable impermanent space just for your car?
For this project I will be making alternative use of spaces in various parking garages. Rather than use these spaces to rest my car, each parking spot will serve a new purpose under my brief ownership of it. This will be accomplished by driving into a garage or lot, finding a vacant spot, and depositing something into it which would require such a size space, i.e. a futon complete with mattress, sheets, pillows, etc. I will leave the items there and return several hours later to pick them up, document changes if any, report how long the items remained, and take some pictures and/or video throughout the process. In some cases, the space will be monitored. In others the result upon pickup will be left as a surprise.
The title refers to the mystery behind random, non-committal occupation of a temporary place for purely selfish utilization.
